Madison’s fall calendar fills up fast — football Saturdays, State Street strolls, farmers market crowds. But the version of autumn worth planning a weekend around is 30 minutes west, where the Driftless hills turn color first and Main Street smells like cider.. Mount Horeb, The World’s Troll Capital, runs three of the region’s most distinct fall events this season: Fall Village Market, Witches’ Night Out, and Burning Troll.

None of them are day-trip events. Here’s the lineup, what to expect at each, and why the smart move is booking a room instead of a return trip to Madison.

Fall Village Market: Downtown Goes Full Harvest: October 3-4, 2026 

Mount Horeb’s downtown fills up with local makers, fall produce, and food vendors for the Fall Village Market. Expect the same troll-lined downtown you already know, dressed for the season: pumpkins on porches, baked goods, and the kind of small-batch vendor booths that don’t show up at big-box craft fairs.

It’s a walkable, 2-day event that pairs naturally with everything already downtown — Sjolinds Chocolate House, Driftless Chocolates, Bergey Jewelry, Sugar River Yarns. Shop the market in the afternoon, grab dinner at Grumpy Troll or Brix Cider, and there’s no reason to drive back to Madison before dark.

Witches’ Night Out: The One You Haven’t Heard of Yet: October 15, 2026 

Here’s a Mount Horeb event most Madison-area visitors don’t know exists: Witches’ Night Out turns downtown into a costumed, girls’ night out Halloween crawl — trick-or-treating through participating shops, seasonal specials, and a Main Street that leans all the way into spooky season without losing the small-town charm.

Witches from all over the state fly to downtown Mount Horeb for this one-night event. Start with an early dinner at one of the restaurants in the downtown area. Buck & Honey’s, Vita Bella, or Bistro 101 is a great place to start. (TIP: come early for dinner. Because of the popularity of this event, almost every restaurant will have a wait at peak dinner time. Then you can enjoy strolling down Main Street stopping into the shops during the event instead of waiting in line for dinner). Many of the bars and restaurants host after parties with live music and drink specials! Plan a designated driver or pair it with a stay at The GrandStay or Sunniva Inn to maximize your evening. 

Burning Troll: Fire, Music, and a 14-Foot Troll: September 26, 2026

Hosted by Brix Cider at the historic Donald Farm just south of town, Burning Troll is Mount Horeb’s answer to the region’s larger arts festivals — live music, craft cider, farm-to-table food, art installations, costumes, and a hand-built troll sculpture set ablaze after dark to close out the night. Camping is available on-site, which tells you everything about how this one is meant to be experienced: not as a drive-in, drive-out event.

It’s the most literal expression of Mount Horeb’s troll identity on the entire fall calendar.

Make Mount Horeb Your Fall Basecamp

None of this means skipping Madison’s fall traditions — the farmers market, a Camp Randall Saturday, a walk down State Street all still work. It means not booking the hotel there. Mount Horeb sits close enough to Madison for any of it to stay on the itinerary, and far enough into the Driftless to deliver fall color, quiet trails, and three events Madison doesn’t have.

Peak color on Military Ridge State Trail, a Blue Mound State Park overlook, and Cave of the Mounds‘ cooler fall hours all stack easily around any of the three events above.
